Math Assessments that offer a Daily Warm-Up for Making Tens, Making Teens, and Making Near-Tens and Near-Teens.
This product is a small portion of a comprehensive bundle of activities with everything you need to help the primary learner construct the developmental steps of making tens, thus building a foundation for number sense.
“Daily Warm-Ups” - These assessment tasks progress in difficulty as the student advances in their ability to see relationships with numbers that make 10. (Integers with a sum of ten are often referred to as “Best Friends”.) The goal is for the student to recognize quickly the sums of ten and improve their time and accuracy with each daily practice.
Next, the student constructs the concept of “near tens” using plus 1 and minus 1.
Later, the student progresses to “making teens and near teens” and last but not least, the student understands how quantities on both sides of an equal sign represent the same amount.
Note: The term “daily” may mean most days for a month or more depending on the mastery level of each student. The practice sheets can be used again and again since the same problems often repeat. They can also be folded in half for younger students to complete 10 a day rather than 20.
“Finding the Sum of Four Addends” This assessment tool helps the teacher see if a student truly understands the “when, why, and how” of making tens. These problems can be very difficult if a student uses the “guess and check” method and finds they have to adjust their answers often. But if they understand that making tens will help then find “friendly numbers” the student will move through these problems with ease.
Check the preview to compare your students' readiness level. The assessments are intended to challenge the "end-of-year" kindergartner, offer year-round practice to first graders, and useful as a great 2nd grade review at the beginning of the year.
