Do you have students who seem to forget about how to regroup when adding? Perhaps you have students who are working below grade level, students with a learning disability in math, or students whose first language is not English. This activity provides support to all of those students and confirmation to those students who are on or above grade level.
I designed this activity to use in my 4th grade classroom but I see the possibility of it being used (or parts of it) in 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade.
This activity consists of 24 pages with 2 problems on each page. So, there's a total of 48 problems. There are 24 answer pages also.) The difficulty ranges from 2-digit numbers to 6-digit numbers with varying degrees of regrouping. I inserted text boxes for the digits of the answers and smaller ones for the regrouped digits. Many students find this reassuring until they can become more confident with regrouping.
I often alternate between students choosing their own partner to me choosing each pair. Each problem can be taped on the wall as is or you can mount each problem on construction paper. Students number their notebook paper according to the number of problems that you display. (With 48 problems, you'll probably want to divide the cards among several days.)
I start the first pair of students with problem #1. The next pair of students start with problem #2, and so forth. (I didn't number the problems so that you can choose the ones you want to use in one lesson.) Students will complete all of the problems that you have displayed.
We usually check the problems when everyone is finished.
