Product Description
The activities in this product are ideal for use in math centers. They also can be used with your whole class—students can work individually, in pairs, or in small groups.

The primary learning goal for these activities is that students learn how to decompose numbers from 1 to 10 (Common Core Standard K.OA.3). These activities also can be useful in helping first and second graders learn their basic addition facts (Common Core Standards 1.OA.6 and 2.OA.2). The addition facts that students will be working on in these activities are those whose sums are from 1 to 10.

In this activity, students have a given number of animals, from 1 to 10, that they have to put into two groups. For example, in one of the activities, there are “Six bees busy in the hive or buzzing around the flowers.” Students put their six bees on the hive or on the flowers. Then, on the corresponding worksheet, they fill in an equation to represent the way they decomposed 6. Next, they rearrange those six bees, fill in another equation to represent that grouping, and repeat this process to find all of the ways to decompose 6.

This activity is great for differentiated learning because different students can be working on decomposing different numbers (from 1 to 10). Also, you can set different expectations for how many of the equations each student needs to complete—students can progress from finding only one or two ways to decompose a number to finding all of the ways to decompose the number.
