Product Description
** This resource is currently being updated to add August 2018 - June 2019. I'm also adding to the resource so that the items can then be used in future years (bulletin board cards, "this month in history" find a number, blank calendars).

Math Dates, or dates as mathematical expressions, are a great way to work in a little extra math every day, no matter what subject you're teaching!

The basic idea of Math Dates is to use the date as a math enrichment activity. Some days the date might just be there for students to observe and mentally note that the expression is equal to the numbers in the date (this is even great in a non-math class!). Other days you might call attention to the expression and ask students to show you their solutions. This is a great way to address equivalent expressions throughout the entire year!

Using dates as mathematical expressions is an easy way to expose students to new math rules (like cubing or cube roots or exponent rules, etc) or review rules that students have learned (like squaring or order of operations!). As the year progresses, these expressions also include multiplication and division of fractions, a few decimal multiplication expressions, absolute value, and negative integers.

In this Zip file, you’ll find 11 separate PDF files - one for each month from August 2017 through June 2018 (July 2018 - June 2019 will be added throughout the 2017-18 year). Each PDF includes:
1) A directions sheet (same one in each file)
2) A list of the dates for that month (including weekends (you can always put one of the weekend dates on the board during the week, and see if your students notice that you made a “mistake.”)
3) A monthly calendar for students to record the date’s expression and their work for reaching a solution. The calendar also includes the direction for students to create their own expressions.
4) A Cross Number puzzle that includes about half of the dates for the month. This can be used for early finishers, a challenge day, or a sub day (any time during the year).
5) A Find a Number puzzle using the other half of the dates for the month.
6) *** 10 “Mixed Math Dates Puzzles” – 5 Cross Number Puzzles and 5 Find a Number puzzles were added on 8/6 (so price increased a little). These puzzles each use dates from all of the months, which makes them a little more challenging than the monthly puzzles.
