Product Description
You may have seen my “dates as mathematical expressions” on Instagram over the past year and a half. Those posts/dates were geared toward middle school, but this resource is for upper elementary students.

If you haven't used Math Dates before, the basic idea is to use the date as a math enrichment type of activity. Some days the date might just be there for students to observe and mentally note that the expression is equal to the numbers in the date (even great in a non-math class!). Other days you might call attention to the expression and ask students to show you their solution.

Using dates as mathematical expressions is a great way to expose students to new math rules (like order of operations, exponents, different notations) or review/reinforce concepts or math facts that students have learned. These October dates use:
* basic facts/operations
* order of operations
* several exponents,
* a few square roots and
* a few decimal problems.

Math Dates are a great way to develop the idea of equivalent expressions!

In this resource, you’ll find:
1) A list of the dates for the month (including weekends (you can always put one of the weekend dates on the board during the week, and see if your students notice that you made a “mistake.”)
2) A calendar for students to record the date’s expression and their work for reaching a solution. The calendar also includes the direction for students to create their own expressions. (I found that some students really like this challenge – they initially asked me if they could create their own, so now they’ll have a place to keep track of them!)
3) A Match and Color page that includes about half of the dates for the month (they’re the same expressions as those in the monthly list.) This can be used for early finishers, a challenge day, or a sub day (any time during the year).
4) A Find a Number puzzle using the other half of the dates for the month.

Be on the lookout for more Math Dates months!
