Math debate journals are a great tool for encouraging critical thinking in mathematics. Use these 45 different math debates to get your students constructing mathematical arguments and critiquing the mathematical thinking of others. The debates are grouped according to the Common Core domains for fourth grade. Each math debate prompt comes in 3 different formats for you to choose from. Also included is a student-friendly list of characteristics of a good math debate response to help students while writing. There’s no need to create a whole new journal for your math debates. Simply implement these into whatever math notebooks you are already using such as interactive notebooks, problem solving notebooks, math journals, or simply have students complete them on individual paper.
