This product contains posters and sentence stem cards to encourage accountable talk and strengthen student discourse during math class. Eighteen different talk cards are included. Cards are color coded to differentiate between questions a student can ask others and statements to explain one's own thinking.
I used these in my second grade Spanish dual immersion class when students worked in groups to solve the week's math word problem. We used and reviewed the talk stems constantly. The posters were displayed during lessons, and students kept the cards on a binder ring for handy reference. My coach at first thought it might be too advanced, but by the end of the year was amazed by how the students had internalized the discussion aids and thus were able to more deeply understand mathematical concepts and clearly articulate their own thinking. The resource could definitely be used for older students, though. I created these cards to address the Common Core Standards Math and Speaking & Listening standards.
