Estimating and measuring go together. To increase measurement skills, students need to have some frame of reference, some background of experiences that help them measure. Estimating activities help with this. In these two activities, students first estimate the number of objects in different jars- how much they hold or the capacity as a warm up to volume. In the second activity, they first estimate volume, then practice accurate measuring skills with a graduated cylinder to find the volume of irregular shaped solids.
Teacher instructions, rubrics for scoring, student recording sheets, and a writing activity are included. Use to teach or an an assessment of skills.
