A real-life hands-on data exploration project that incorporates great math review for 8th grade Statistics and Probability while giving students insight about how grading works and how they can use math to improve their own scores.
As they complete this project, your class will:
-meet and get to know 12 pretend students
-make predictions about their final grades based on their traits and habits
-calculate final grades for an assigned student
-compare personal and group data trends to draw conclusions
-practice displaying data to illustrate a point
This 14-page documents contains everything you need to complete this 2-3 day project start to finish. There are detailed instructions, tips for how you may want to prepare and/or follow-up, worksheets for two periods, all necessary data on the make-believe class, tables that you can simply print and cut into strips for each partner, and a complete answer key.
I always start my school year with this project because it is a great review tool that leads directly into content for both 8th grade math and Math 1. It is entertaining and collaborative, so it's a fun way for classmates to get to know each other and practice working together and at the same time, it helps give students ownership and power over their choices and academic goals. I also offer math journals and guided goal-setting in my store that make great follow-ups to this assignment if you are interested!
