Puzzled Penguin is very confused in second grade! We need to try to help him think through his mathematical confusion! By using different Visible Thinking routines (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning and the 4C's), we can help him fix the problems he's having!
This bundle contains Puzzled Penguin activities for ALL 7 units and will take you through the entire year.
The first routine (used in Unit 1) is Claim-Evidence-Reasoning. Puzzled Penguin has a problem and we need to make a claim on whether he is solving the problem correctly. Then students think of evidence/proof for how they know he made a mistake. Finally, students reason with their evidence and explain in words what Puzzled Penguin did wrong.
The second routine (used in Units 2-7) is the 4C's routine. The four C's stand for: Connections, Challenges, Concepts, and Changes. We try to connect to what Puzzled Penguin is doing right, we challenge his thinking that we disagree with, we identify the key concepts or big ideas Puzzled Penguin is missing, and finally we try to change his thinking.
These routines are a great way for students to explain their math thinking in words! It helps them identify the key concepts needed to understand certain mathematical ideas.
Hope you enjoy!
