Math Word Problems, PARCC-like presentation and expectations. Excellent review, assessment, reinforcement, extra help for students in Grade 3.

This product is three sheets. Students practice writing equations to solve word problems, and follow directions to respond to the questions. This is similar to expectations on assessments, to include the Grade 3 PARCC Math assessment:

Page 1: 2 related word problems involving solving for perimeter and area. Students have a box to present their response.

Sample: Paula wants to find the perimeter of the rectangle below. Write an equation to show how she should figure it out.

Marco wants to find the area of the same rectangle. He uses the same equation that Paula just used. Explain whether that is correct, or not correct. Write an equation to show how Marco should find the area of the rectangle.

Page 2: 2 unrelated word problems. To respond to the question in Part 1, students provide an equation using p as the unknown. To respond to the question in Part 2, students must show work about how they added and divided to come up with a solution.

Page 3: 3 related and unrelated word problems. To respond to the question in Part 1, students must figure out how much tomato seeds cost the subject, then cucumber seeds, then combine those sums to find the total. They must show their work. To respond to the question in Part 2, students refer to data about how much money a person counted on specific days of the week.

The third part of this page has students discussing someone’s idea that she can find the perimeter of a square by multiplying the length times the height. Students explain why this is not the way to find it, and they write an equation and solve it to find the actual perimeter.
