How can reach deeper thinking each day as we begin our math lessons? These math journals offer deep thinking for all of your first grade students. They can be done with a math buddy or independently at the beginning of each math block. These journals are set up for daily use. Each journal page includes 4 components: number of the day, thinking about math, story problems, and daily data. Students will use a weekly class graph to analyze, problem solve, and understand data. The same graph is used all week and students focus on a different daily data task each day.
- Who is the best superhero?
- Do you think penguins are neat?
-Do you like to make s'mores?
- What is your favorite type of cookie?
- I can ride a two wheel bicycle.
Students also work to create ways to make the number of the day, focus on a specific math problem, and solve a story problem using numbers pictures and words. This journal is the single highest reason for my boost in end of the year test scores. It offers deep thinking on a daily basis.
