# Math Lab: Scientific Notation and the Solar System

Product Description
I love to close the school year in mathematics with a great activity for my students! The following activity is just that for the kids...!

* Working with a partner, students create a model of the solar system on adding
machine tape

* Students convert into scientific notation the distances
between each planet and the sun.

* Students record all calculations onto a provided table.

* Students Select a scale to use in creating their model of the solar system.

* Students determine the position of each planet, fitting each to scale.

* Students answer five analysis questions that involve review of previously learned
material: writing inequalities for "between", "at least", and "at most".

* Ratios using scientific notation are included where students must divide scientific
notation and then adjust decimals and exponents to simplify.

* Students verbalize, in their own words, concerning the value of using scientific
notation.

* Students work independently to create a map of the solar system on graph paper
using a scale that they select.

* This activity is fun for students and involves mathematical reasoning along with
some great creativity they may employ simultaneously while doing their
calculations.

* The lesson is aligned with Common Core and "Across the Curriculum" standards.

* I am confident that students will enjoy the activity, learn a great deal, and
instructors will find the activity supportive of the lesson on scientific notation as well
as lessons previously taught.

* This is ideal for a bit of review prior to final exams!
