This quote reminds us that students can often lose their place and get lost in Math. The intention of our Math Place Mats is to make sure that our student do not get lost. The Place Mats do this by building Math experiences from Concrete to Representational to Abstract.
All of the following methods should be utilized with our Math Place Mats.
1. Teachers need to provide students a detailed instructional approach modeled by the Place Mat. Teachers need to guide students through a defined instructional sequence, again, modeled by the Place Mat where students learn to regularly apply multiple strategies that effective learners use as a fundamental part of mastering concepts.
2. Students need to learn to manage their own learning with specific prompting or solution-oriented questions. Those questions should be created and utilized in conjunction with the Place Mat Strategies.
3. Students can then be paired to learn or practice an academic task supported by the Place Mats.
4. Last, the Place Mats are visual representations that should be utilized to teach and support the practice of mathematical concepts.
The place mats make abstract concepts tangible, difficult ideas understandable, and multifaceted problems solvable. Visual representations bring research-based options, tools, and alternatives to bear in meeting the instructional challenge of mathematics education (Gersten et al., 2008).
