Updated for 2018!
This is one of my favorite classroom activities of the year! It is the perfect way for you to show students that math is in EVERYTHING. It is also a great way to get them to talk about data and defend their predictions.
Both the football and basketball packs give the background of each game as well as explain what math has to do with both. These projects really involve students in the excitement of the season while getting them to plot and discuss data.
This product is constantly being updated to get ready for the upcoming seasons.
The Bowl Madness unit includes:
- a short informational text with a diagram explaining the math in football
- data from the past 20 years of the football championship to get students to talk about strong programs over the past 20 years
-preseason rankings from the past 3 years
-a sheet to keep track of the AP rankings over the season
-information about the new football playoff starting in 2014
-a page to make predictions for the playoff
-a playoff team research page and report form
-a post-season reflection
This Data Madness unit includes:
-a short informational text giving the background of the NCAA tournament
-data from the past 20 years of the tournament and a sheet to guide students on how to use this data to make new predictions
-historical data about how well the seeds do in the tournament
-a research sheet for students to study one particular team from the tourney
-a way to keep track of data throughout the tournament
-a post-tourney reflection
A great way to get kids excited about the project is to show highlights from the championship the year before. For basketball this is especially easy. Google the song "One Shining Moment" to see the highlights from the year before.
