This is a variety of word problems using data taken from the 2014 NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball tournament. There is a set of problems each for Grades 3, 4, and 5. Solutions are included, as is a Smartboard 10 file for each set of problems.
They use scoring, playing time, and attendance data for the UConn teams (since I teach in Connecticut), but there’s no partisan content to them.
Each grade level’s problems begin with 1-2 pages of scoring and attendance data which students need to extract from tables.
There are problems involving interpreting and drawing graphs, calculating perimeter and area, calculating both with one dimension missing, points, graphing minutes against points, etc., etc. A list of the grade-specific CCSS addressed in these problems is below, though many other standards are also involved.
