These Math Mats help make learning more concrete! Starting as young as preschool
or kindergarten, students can learn the concept of “part-part-whole”. Using
counters of any kind (Cheerios, buttons, blocks, fingers, etc.), students can learn
that 1 and 1 make 2. From here, students can learn the concept of addition and
subtraction. Have students place 5 counters on the “whole” and drag 2 to one of the
“parts”. How much is left?
This is a great way for students to visualize word problems all the way up to 5th grade (even higher for remedial students) with larger numbers, decimals, or fractions (the 'part' is the numerator and the 'whole' is the denominator; you can flip the mat upside down if it helps).
Lamination or sheet protectors allow for a wipe-off surface! If you print back-to-back,
the reverse has an option for three parts, allowing for triple addends, multi-step
word problems, and even basic multiplication and division! Print the colored or
black-and-white mats for whole-class instruction or print in color for homeschool,
small group, or tutoring. Card stock is recommended for durability. You could even
poster-print it for the front of the class.
