Beach Bum Olympics is the perfect math activity for the end of the school year (although it can be used any time of year). Students are required to make estimations before beginning the station rotations after the teacher explains what will be done at each station. Later, at each station, students perform various measurements including distance, length, mass, volume, circumference, and area and then compare them to their estimations.
The student will the smallest overall difference between his/her estimations and their actual measurements is the winner. You can give medals (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
Students love this activity because it gets them moving, it’s hands-on (who doesn't love to play with sand and water), and they love to compete with their classmates!
