1. AL E. GATOR: Compare Numbers greater than / less than
This activity includes three differentiated levels (2-digit, 3-digit, and 4-digit) and includes speaking and listening Common Core benchmarks as well as first and second grade math benchmarks.
The object of the activity is to feed Al E. Gator.
Students will take turns spinning. They will record their number in any box on their side of the worksheet (one meal at a time). When every box is filled, students will compare the numbers based on the meanings of hundreds, tens, and ones. They will discuss the numbers and use >, =, and < symbols to record the results of the comparisons in the circle. They will then continue to Al’s next meal. Students build place value knowledge as they learn placement strategies to win the game.
TEACHER PREP: Provide a clear spinner (or use a pencil and paperclip), the spinner board and your choice of differentiated work pages. Place work pages in sheet protectors for use with dry erase markers.

2. DECOMPOSE for BALANCED EQUATIONS
Use this with Kagan Groups in your centers or take hard copy data as a formative assessment.
Centers: students will roll 2 dice and place the numbers in the base of the balance. They will decompose the number two ways and write those expressions on wither side of the balance.
*Helpful Hint: I place my dice in a small water bottle with glitter or food coloring to make a “magic dice” shaker. This keeps the dice from flying off the desk and causing a racket. Students shake the bottle, hold the bottle up, and use the numbers they see on the bottom of the bottle.
ASSESSMENT: distribute the worksheet and you will roll the dice so the students have a common set of numbers

3. BALANCING EQUATIONS: addition / subtraction board game
Students place an expression card on the left side of the balance and record the product in the triangle base. Next they will place a number card on the right side. They will write the operation (add or subtract) and record the number needed to balance the equation.

4. NUMBER DETECTIVE: Place Value / Regrouping Unit
This unit includes FOUR SCAFFOLDED LEVELS! The unit takes students through the foundational level of place value and regrouping and prepares them for the abstract.
Use the task cards in your choice of THREE GAMES: Tic Tac Toe, Scavenger Hunt, or Scoot. All games include student answer recording sheets to ensure accountability with center work or provide you with hard copy data for formative assessments.

7. SPINNING for COINS: adding coins game (2 pages)
This differentiated game allows struggling students to participate with their group with less dependence upon others. Students will spin twice and compute the sum of the two coins.
The spinner set includes one side with coins and another with coin value numbers. When printed two-sided, struggling students can flip the page for assistance with coin values.

8. SHOW ME THE MONEY!
Use this math game with your Kagan groups or in small group intervention. This is a team activity in which each student is responsible for individual work. Everyone is accountable.
Students will take turns making two spins. The first number is the tens and the second is the ones (7, 3 would be 73 cents). The students are now responsible for showing their thinking on the worksheet. They will record how they skip counted up to that number 73: 25, 50, 60, 70, 71, 72, 73.
By seeing their thoughts on paper, you will be able to see where mistakes are happening.
