This resources aims to help students develop mental subtraction strategies in order to develop a mastery of facts and make sense of number combinations.
The strategies include counting up, counting back, halving and using near halves, and making tens. This is not an exhaustive list of available subtraction strategies, but provides a sufficient foundation for building conceptual understanding and operational sense.
Each strategy is accompanied with a definition, an anchor chart, flashcards, and sample tasks to develop the strategic understanding.
This resource also includes cards for a word wall to help students’ develop their mathematics vocabulary, a parent letter, and assessment ideas to monitor and celebrate students’ understanding.
