This Project Based Learning (PBL) Unit works through several of the 6th Grade Common Core Math Standards as well as Next Generation Science Standards where they must re-design a Cereal Box.

Problem Statement:

How can we recreate the cereal box or container so we can decrease the amount of materials used to create the box while simultaneously increasing the amount of cereal the container can hold?

Overview of Assignment:

You and your team of engineers have just been assigned a new job working for Endless Treats Cereal Company. Endless Treats Cereal Company wants to become more environmentally conscious. Therefore, they want to change the designs of their cereal boxes and containers so they can reduce the amount of materials they use for each cereal while still being able to hold the same amount of cereal. The name of the cereal is Super Snackers

Middle School Math - 6th Grade - Cereal Box Project

Topics Covered:
•The Engineering Design Process - 8 Lessons
•Volume of Prisms – 3 Lessons
•Area and Surface Area of Polygons using Nets – 6 Lessons
•Research and Investigation
•Presentation Development

This Project Based Learning unit targets 6th Grade Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies Standards with a focus on the Engineering Design Process (NGSS), but can easily be modified to meet standards for grade levels above and below with simple modifications.
