With the introduction of the Common Core State Standards, kindergarten students need to develop an understanding that the numbers 11-19 are made up of 1 ten and additional ones.
This can be a tricky concept for them to grasp! Make it a hands-on building activity by giving them PB&J number sandwiches!
Students build PB&J sandwiches by finding the bottom piece of bread with a number on it, adding some peanut butter with cubes divided into a ten and ones, jelly with dots grouped in a ten and the top slice of bread with the ten and ones written out. The students will see that there are many ways to write the number in relation to base ten principles.
This kit includes:
* an explanation of the CCSS for Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
* instructions for preparation and use
*one complete set of color sandwiches (bread, PB and J!) for the numbers 11-19
*black and white printable versions of the PB and J for print savings (can be colored in by students!)
