Have you heard of the math police? Do they visit your school each year? This entertaining story introduces students to 2 common errors that students make when they practice subtraction with regrouping (2 digit, but the concepts/ message can be applied to larger numbers). I use this story every year to introduce subtraction with regrouping to my 3rd graders! They love it! We watch for the math police and warn each other about math jail when we are practicing subtraction.
Included in the presentation is the Math Police story (are your students stealing?),examples of 2 common errors that students make when regrouping in subtraction, and some tips to stay out of math jail!
This PDF document is designed to be shown like a powerpoint presentation- just reduce the size of the page until the entire slide is showing and then use the space bar to advance to the next slide. (Because of restrictions on the clipart, I am not able to post it as a powerpoint file.)
This is the 3rd grade presentation. A 2nd grade presentation is also available (the only difference is the reference to the specific grade level on one page).
