This set includes a series of story problems where students are presented with information in a table format. They must use this data to answer problems that require addition and subtraction of fractions in one and two steps.
There is also a Looking at Student Work task embedded where students will use the “My Favorite No” protocol. They first look at the work and determine what the student did well, making it the teacher’s “favorite” no. They then determine where the student’s thinking went wrong (the “no”) and fix it. This ability to think about the thinking of others is an important part of Math Practice #3. The student work is based on common misconceptions observed in 5th graders when they are adding and subtracting fractions.
