This is an effective tool for teaching specific problem solving strategies to your students and as they become more comfortable, they take ownership.
Use “Math Problem Solving Model” to teach in a whole class setting, followed by small group instruction, as needed.
Initially this process takes time because students are writing every step to solving word problems. However, it is worth the effort, because once students understand the process and learn to use the strategies, they will become more self confident. Instead of saying, “I don’t know where to start,” they will say, “Oh, yeah, I need to …”
Students can keep track of their progress by pasting the “Strategies Resource Guide” in their math notebooks.
