OVERVIEW:

The 28 task cards included in this collection are designed to measure your students’ ability to apply skills taught during your telling time measurement unit. Each of these word problems requires students to utilize problem solving, reasoning, critical thinking, and precise modeling skills.

In order to complete these tasks, students will need the ability to tell time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Students should also be able to solve word problems involving the addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes.

4 Transfer Task Cards: These tasks are designed to asses student understanding. Each of these higher-order tasks requires students to evaluate, design, analyze, make connections, or find patterns while problem solving.

THREE WAYS TO USE THESE TASK CARDS:

INSTRUCTIONAL TOOL:
There always seems to be a shortage of quality word problems in popular math adoptions, but these are the types of problems our students often struggle with most. Now you can easily give your students more practice solving complex word problems without having to write your own problems every morning. Here are a few ways I use these task cards as an instructional tool in my classroom:

> Guided practice during small group work
> Step-by-step modeling during mini lessons
> Guided number talk-style conversations

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE TOOL:
These task cards are also perfect for independent practice. You can scaffold the amount of support students are given by using the recording sheet options provided. No matter what structure you use during your math block, you can incorporate these task cards:

> At your seat rotation during Math Workshop, Guided Math, or Daily 3
> Word problem station during Math Centers

ASSESSMENT TOOL:
These task cards can be used as both a formative and summative assessment tool.

Formatively assess student understanding of telling time to the nearest minute and measuring elapsed time by checking student task card responses daily or weekly.

Summatively assess student mastery of third grade telling time standards in this task card collection using the four Transfer Tasks included. These tasks require students to evaluate, design, analyze, make connections, or find patterns while problem solving.
