This is a graphic organizer that can be used to break down any word problem. It is not recommended that this organizer be used with every word problem though. Rather, I recommend that this be used once a week with a more challenging problem. In this organizer, I use icons to identify areas of depth and complexity. This also fits with the practice of cognitively-guided-instruction. This is also a great opportunity to practice all of the 8 Mathematical Practices!
Students have to:
*Explain their thinking
*Break down the problem into parts
*Show their process
*Compare their process with their peers
*Give it a try and explain their errors if they are wrong
*Score themselves and compare with the teacher score
