Description
This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about concepts of metric measurement. In this 5-day unit, students will use their knowledge of the metric system to open a pie shop. This math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it's available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource is aligned with the following 5th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.A.1
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
This resource is available in both Printable & Digital Google Slides versions.
What's included in this resource:
•Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around pie shops.
•Measurement Concepts: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to convert from larger units to smaller units and from smaller units to larger units within the metric system.
•Addition Concepts: Using addition concepts, students will add numbers that have been converted.
•Purchasing Ingredients: The students will use their calculations to create a shopping list for their pie shop.
•Wrap Up: Students will review their decisions and discuss future considerations for their pie shop.
