Product Description
Looking for a manipulative lesson to reinforce polynomials? Looking for an interactive lesson to use with cooperative groups? This CUBE AND STACK PUZZLE requires a 3 member team to analyze polynomials. Each team member gets a different cube template. Each team member cuts out and constructs the cube. Then they work together to stack 3 cubes so that 4 sides describe polynomials. It is challenging, but my students think it's fun.

I've used this activity for review, to teach a concept after a brief introduction, for after school help sessions, and to assist students who want to make a set of cubes to help them study. A set of templates for extra credit is available if students finish their daily work early. Some students have asked to make their own set to study for a test.

Cube 1 lists types of mathematical expressions (monomial, binomial, trinomial, and polynomial). Cube 2 has descriptions of each mathematical expression. Cube 3 gives examples of each type of expression. Each cube has 6 sides, so some information on the sides may distract students. You need to know that all information, on all sides of the cube, is about mathematical expressions, (i.e. Standard form).

After the stack is correct, students have a worksheet to complete and submit.

Your purchase includes a sample lesson plan, directions, three colored templates with student directions and objective/question of the day, a worksheet, and an answer key. It also has the key for the correct stack formation.

Run off a set of templates for each team. (Black and white works as well as color). Our school uses cheap copy paper and it works fine. Each team will need scissors and glue. I encourage you to make your own set.

Add your cubes to your math center as an activity, too. I also encourage you to practice stacking your cubes! Remember, the puzzle stack key is included in your purchase.

One reminder, some students are going to make perfect cubes, others are not, but the learning, teamwork, and thinking are the focus. Have students help each other. There are always a few "cube building" whiz kids that can help.

I offer other PUZZLE sets, and find that 4 CUBE AND STACK PUZZLES during the year increases motivation in class.

If you are interested in having students make a holder for their cube set, let me know.

Thanks, and have fun!
