With the Math Puzzlers: St. Patrick's Day Edition, students are presented with a 3 x 3 grid with St. Patrick's-themed images. Each of the three images have a different value. Students are asked to identify and decode what the value is of each image based on the sums presented at the end of each row or column. This activity allows students to use their knowledge of addition and combine it with algebra to find the missing values.
Please note that this is a collection of 8 St. Patrick's-themed puzzlers. While the primary focus is for students to add the values together, students can use addition or subtraction strategies to solve for each St. Patrick's-themed image.
Focus or Purpose:
The focus of this resource is to have students practice mental math skills by identifying the missing values using a known value. For example, in some columns or rows there might be two of the same image. Students can use these similar values to identify which value could be added to the current equation to find out the unknown. For example, if the column containing the two images of a shamrock, and one leprechaun hat add up to 13. It might be concluded that each shamrock has a value of 5, and the leprechaun hat has a value of 3. Students would then use this information to see if it can fit the other given row/column sums.
What is Included?
Included in this resource are 8 St. Patrick's-themed math puzzlers. Each puzzler is a 3 x 3 grid so that students of a younger age can easily work with the values. Answer keys are provided in the back of this packet. Students are asked to record the value of each image at the bottom of the activity page. You can choose to take up these grids as a whole class, or in small-groups.
Students are also given the chance to rate the difficulty of the grids. Each grid contains addition equations that add up to 20. The values are friendly numbers, so that if there is an uneven value, there is an even value also included to allow students to easily access their mental math skills. These puzzlers are created with the intention to challenge students, but also allow students to grow in terms of their knowledge.
