Math question stems and conversation starters are a useful tool for engaging your students in talking about the math that they are working on in your classroom. Use them for yourself as you engage in conversations about math with your students or teach your students how to use them with each other as they work with partners or in groups. They can be especially helpful when you are practicing the 8 Mathematical Practices, use Number Talks, or Accountable Talk. You'll find 8 black and white pages (4 for primary students and 4 for intermediate students), with a total of 38 questions and statements such as:
"Can you repeat what ___ said in your own words?"
"Why did you chose this method?"
"How did you know which math operation to use?"
"What other told might you need to solve this?
"What is getting in your way of solving this?"
I've included 2 sets of the questions. The second set has images that might appeal more to older students.
