Math + STEM: Ratio - create a storyboard for a video game that incorporates ratio.

Engage your students with a math challenge that incorporates their interest in video games while learning ratio.

Picture your class quietly drawing their video game storyboards while explaining how they correctly incorporated ratio into their game design.

Your students will benefit from this product by learning how to apply coordinates to a real problem that your students will be engaged with.

Your students will also learn how to apply design thinking to their learning.

This product comes with an assessment rubric

This product requires no technology. Students design their video game by sketching it out on the paper template to create their storyboard.

Instructions: Print off and staple together the design challenge booklet and give it to students to create their storyboard. The booklet has students demonstrate their progress learning and mastering the math skill while sketching out their video game and embedding the math into their game.

This product combines Problem Based Learning, Inquiry, a Design Challenge and curriculum into one activity.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.

NGSS: MS-ETS 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 Develop an iterative model to achieve optimal design

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences

Product Objective

1. Students will correctly demonstrate how to use ratio.

2. Students will create a storyboard that demonstrates and explains the functionality of a game.

NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to convey experiences and events.
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
