Let your students take the "Math Staircase Challenge"!
Included with your purchase are 5 staircase challenge worksheets (with answer keys) that give students practice with one digit by two, three and four digit multiplication and four, three, and two digit by one digit division.
Students will fill in the boxes as they multiply and divide their way down the staircase. Students can gain a better understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division encourage them to work their way up the staircase simply by changing the operation (from multiplication to division, or from division to multiplication).
This is a great exercise for students to use to practice various methods of multiplication and division, such as partial product, area models, base 10 blocks, "Big 7" and of course the standard algorithm.
These worksheets allow students to know if they have multiplied or divided correctly because if they have, they will end up back with the number they started. If they don't they can take the opportunity to try and find their mistake. Students will learn just as much from finding and analyzing their errors.
I hope you and your students benefit from this activity. Check back soon for more staircase challenges.
