These cards help students develop conceptual understanding of area models. Each card has a drawing comprised of different numbers of pattern blocks. The figure represents the whole, and students are then asked to identify a way to represent a fractional part of the whole. This activity is aligned to the following two Common Core State Standard domains: Numbers and Operations - Fractions; & Ratios and Proportional Relationships. These cards may be used with partners or as a teacher-led activity with groups of students. Have pattern blocks available so students may build the areas if needed.
