Students get tired of listening to the same old teacher doing the same 3 examples problems so why not give them some math stations. These stations are design to be a review about functions (maybe before the test or after all the function material has been covered).
There are 5 stations so make sure you have 5 specific groups of desks or chairs set up around the room (some students even enjoy working on the floor or on a rug if you don't have enough movable desks to make 5 stations. At each station their should be 1 or 2 sheets with the directions on it (remind students not to write on the instruction sheet at each station, just write on their response sheet--to prevent this you could laminate each instruction page or us a clear sleeve. Then divide the class into groups that will work together and provide a visible timer to keep students on track. (If this needs to be a 2 day project that works as well) **It saves you some time if you explain things the day before just to get the students prepared for what is coming the next day**
Station 1: write 2 functions based on the tables with given data
Station 2: Graph each set of points and list the domain and range
Station 3: Given the 3 functions, solve for different values
Station 4: Based on the 2 functions, complete the function table (students choose the values...but it works best if they choose values like -1, 0, 1, and 2 so you might want to suggest those values) and then graph the functions
Station 5: Describe 2 qualitative graphs and then 2 draw 2 qualitative graphs based on the story.
If you feel that any station is going to be completed too quickly compared to the other stations feel free to add things like: put flash cards at that table and have them practice once they finish, or complete any missing work or a bonus challenge problem on the board to work on.
The students will be given a response sheet with places for them to record their answers in an organized way. (this makes it very easy to grade) Just be aware that station 4 on the response sheet is split - part on the front and part on the back.
I know that students will enjoy moving around the room, just make sure you set clear expectations as to how the movement should be, what voice level they should be at, and how they should be focused.
