The Math Stick is based on the same principal as the Arithmetic Desk Zipper. However instead of a zipper, the Math stick consists of a dowel with a number line (0-20 units) and a bead. Students can manipulate the Math Stick to calculate addition and subtraction problems.
To operate for addition, the student initially places the bead on the first addend, then moves the bead to the right the number of spaces of the second addend. Thus ending on the correct sum.
To operate for subtraction, the student moves the bead to the number that is being subtracted from (minuend), then moves bead the to left the number of spaces of the number that is being taken away (subtrahend). Where the bead rests is the difference or answer to the problem.
The Math Stick is particularly suited for the older elementary student because it fits nicely in the desk, ready for use,and is less obvious to other students in the class. Therefore sparing the arithmetic struggling student embarrassment. However the Math stick is easy to use for the lower elementary student as well.
