These "Scene Mats" are scenes of the beach, ocean, the park with a fence, and the park with monkey bars. They are very basic scenes, but highly useable for students to use to build and create their own story problems using manipulatives.
My students have used these this year for addition and subtraction story problems. They love them because they are bright, colorful, and a fun way to set a background for the story problems that they want to create.
This mats have endless possibilities. They can also be used for writing (setting) activities as well as story creation in reading.
They are aligned to common core standards for the following standards:
MCCK.OA.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings2, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
MCCK.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
MCCK.OA.3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
MCCK.OA.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
MCCK.OA.5 Fluently add and subtract within 5.
I hope you enjoy using them as much as I do!
