Students often struggle with summarizing their learning experience. I often found that students would write basic sentences that would summarize their work (i.e. we took notes. We read the chapter. We did practice problems). I realized that my students were doing this not because they were lazy, but because they struggled with structuring a summary for their mathematical learning. To overcome this, I created a template my students could use to guide their thinking and explanation. After implementing it, my students were better able to explain their learning, while at the same time becoming better writers.
With the implementation of the Common Core, writing is crucial to student success and templates help students to focus on the content of their learning without becoming hung up on the structure.
