Spot Math Talk Spots are a way to help foster dialogue in the math classroom. There are 24 math spots in a color version and a black/white version that you can post in the classroom, store in a basket during small group instruction, or pass out to students. Pick and choose math spots that work best for your students!
• Post math spots around the classroom or on a bulletin board to foster communication during math class.
• Collect these math spots in a basket and keep them handy during small group instruction to elicit math reasoning and metacognition.
• Pick a math spot and model visible thinking during guided math.
• Have students choose a math spot that asks them to reflect on their math thinking. Then in their math journals, students can reflect and share their thinking with each other. Students could look for similarities and differences in thinking.
Spot Math Talk Mats can be used during small group instruction or during partner work to encourage math dialogue. There are three different versions of the Spot Math Talk Mats. The type and level of questions vary.
