Number talks are a great way to promote number sense and problem solving skills in your classroom. Using these discussion starter and question cards during your talks will improve your students ability to engage in mathematical discussions and strengthen their math skills. These cards especially help students who struggle with the language of math and coming up with questions and/or responses during a discussion group.
When I used these in my classroom I printed and laminated the cards and then punched a hole in the upper left corner and put the cards on a ring. You could make multiple copies and split your students into groups, giving each group a ring of cards. You could also pass out a card to each individual student to use during your discussion card. These cards could also be used for written math journal responses. The possibilities are endless!
