Math Talks for Your Calendar Math Time
There are 20 different cards. The cards are...
•Today’s Number Is... On this page, simply choose any number that you are working on. Write the number in the top box and ask the students what number it is. Then there is a box to record what number is one more than the given number and what is one less.
•Comparing Numbers... You write in any two numbers you want your students to compare. Choose the correct alligator head to show which number is greater or less. There is also an equal sign. (Sometimes I change it up and show the numbers to be compared by drawing a die, domino, number word, tally marks, addition or subtraction sentence.... They love when I do this because it creates more of a “mystery” for them to solve!)
•3 Ways to Make... Write a number in the top box. Then have students tell you 3 different ways to represent the number by using addition, subtraction, dice, domino...
•What Number Comes Next?... On this page, write in numbers starting from whatever number you want. The students tell you what comes next. There are 3 lines of blank spaces so you can start counting from 3 different numbers.
•Finish the Pattern... Start drawing any pattern and have the students complete the pattern. There are 3 lines so you can do 3 different patterns.
•Addition... Write in an addition sentence for the students to solve. Or, leave a missing addend for them to solve! There are two addition sentences to be filled in on this page.
•Subtraction... Same as the addition page but for subtraction.
•What’s This Shape?... Draw a shape and have them tell you what it is. Then have them tell you a real world object that is that shape.
Addition with a Ten Frame... This page has a blank ten frame and addition sentence. You can draw in counters and write a sentence any way you want depending on the skill you are working on with your students.
•Teen Numbers with a Ten Frame... This page has two ten frames, the first one has ten counters already in it. Students tell you how many more counters are needed in the second ten frame to make a teen number. Then write the number sentence to go with it.
•Adding with Dice... This page has two blank dice. You draw the pips in the dice and the students tell you how to write and solve the addition sentence.
•Subtracting with Dice... Same as addition but with subtraction.
•Adding with a Domino... This page set up like the dice page except with a blank domino. There is also a page with the domino turned to show vertical addition as well as horizontal.
