Math Letter is a great tool that allows students to correct their incorrect test problems after taking any math test. I used “Math Letters” every year I taught 5th and 6th grade math. Both my students and their parents were grateful for the opportunity to redo incorrect math test problems for an additional grade. “Math Letters” give all students, struggling or not, a chance to review and learn from his/her mistakes. Parents greatly appreciate the “second chance” it gives their child for each math test. Although “Math Letters” take a little extra time and energy, I have found them to be a meaningful way for students to learn specific content they may have missed the first time through. I hope “Math Letters” will become a part of your regular math instruction. Enjoy!

Math Letter Printable (2 pages, copy back-to-back for student use)
A great way to introduce “Math Letters” is to have all students complete a mock “Math Letter.” Once you introduce “Math Letters,” you can copy a stack and make these available in one spot through out the school year. After every math test, students can pick up a “Math Letter” and complete at home. OR, you can copy a stack for yourself and staple to each student’s test.
I gave all students the opportunity to complete a “Math Letter,” even if he/she only missed one problem on the test.
You can add an additional test grade, homework grade, etc. It’s up to you and what you are allowed to do per your district and school site.
