How It Works:
--Ideally, the students should have access to highlighters. If this is not possible, then the words and phrases may be circled with a colored pencil.
--Every time the students come across a math vocabulary word or phrase, it is highlighted or circled.
--The next step would be to give the students opportunities to choose their favorite words and phrases to write and define. Allow several brainstorming sessions to get the students really thinking about what the words and phrases mean to them. Brainstorming may take place during math workshop or math centers.
*While the pages of this dictionary are arranged alphabetically, the actual vocabulary words and phrases are not. I deliberately set it up this way so that it forces the students to look and search for the words/phrases/symbols they’ve heard, seen, read, and written.
*For your convenience, all pages in the math vocabulary dictionary have been numbered.
*I’ve tried to leave some empty spaces on each page of the dictionary for the students to write any other words they come across in their learning and want to place in their dictionaries. For your convenience, one blank dictionary page is included for your kiddos to use as needed.
*REMINDER: The blank dictionary pages and math vocabulary graphic organizers for writing and sketching should be copied on an as-needed basis, as there is only one original page for each.
*The pages in the dictionary may be copied “back-to-back” (or 2-sided) for a total of about 18 to 20 pages. Paper saver! :)
*This product was specifically created for students in grades 1, 2, and 3. However, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students may benefit from reading, writing, and sketching math vocabulary words and phrases, as well.
