Product Description
Math vocabulary in art is the focus of this “looking at art” activity that integrates Art with Language Arts and Math. Students observe ‘with a math eye’ to identify the use of mathematical elements in well-known art work.

***This lesson is included in the “Learn Language Arts Strategies with Art” series***

Art and math are naturally integrated in many ways. Many artists throughout history used proportional precision in realistic works. Other artists have used math elements in abstract compositions. Observing art ‘with a math eye’ gives context to basic and more complex math terms.

This lesson includes

- suggested art works especially suited to using math vocabulary
- summary of the general procedure
- list of materials needed and preparation required
- step-by-step directions for looking at art
- suggested questions for art observation
- suggestions for extending the lesson with art and reading
- list of related resources to enhance the lesson
- a student response worksheet that can be used for working with math vocabulary

This comprehensive lesson is designed to address language arts skills along with art appreciation and art analysis. Extensions can expand the lesson into art technique and art history.

********** PLEASE NOTE ***********

This lesson is one in a series in which students are engaged in art observation activities that focus on specific skills including compare and contrast, fact and opinion, main idea and details, making generalizations, making inferences, vocabulary learning strategies, and more.
