My students absolutely love taking a Math Walk! What is a Math Walk? A Math Walk is simple! First, I place the 12 Math Challenge Cards around the classroom and give students a copy of the Math Walk Board. Our math block is long! Somewhere in the middle of the block, when kids need a movement break, I have them take out their Math Walk Boards. I tell students to search for 3 Math Challenge Cards (not in any special order) and then complete the task provided and record on their Math Walk Board. Students take a 5 minute movement break as they search for the cards and then solve. It provides a meaningful daily "break" from math and gets the kids up and moving, all while interacting with other students to complete each task. You may assign as many Match Challenge Cards as you'd like (1 per day, 2 per day etc.) and use as much time as you'd like. I usually give my students time for a 3 card daily challenge. When the boards are completed, we review the cards together as the students self-correct their work.
I love it because it breaks up our math lesson while the kids are still actively engaged in a math related activity! The kids love it because they get to get up and move and interact with other students!
