Mnemonics are often used to help students remember the rules. The first letters of words represent various operations. Different countries use different mnemonics.

The United States uses PEMDAS and GEMDAS. They stand for Parentheses/Grouping, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction.

Canada and New Zealand use BEDMAS, which stands for Brackets, Exponents, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction.

The UK, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Australia use BODMAS meaning Brackets, Order, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction. Nigeria and some other West African countries also use BODMAS. The UK also uses BIDMAS, standing for Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction.
