The activities in this packet integrate Common Core State Standards for Math (1.NBT.C.4, 1.NBT.C.5), and CCSS-ELA standards for Writing, Speaking & Listening (W.1.2 & SL.1.5)
In first grade, it’s so important to get students to explain their math thinking. These are tried and true winter-themed stories starring my own first graders. They feature common activities students may engage in during a snowy winter.
The focus of these stories is using a number line, adding and subtracting by tens, to solve problems. I have squeezed in some extra practice with algorithms on most pages, or added number bonds along with the opportunities for writing number sentences.
The packet gets progressively harder, in terms of how much writing students have to do, as well as mixing addition/subtraction stories.
In addition, I have included three blank pages for you to write your own math stories. I have found it helpful to model stories whole group, writing several together, then letting kids write their own. They are VERY motivated by stories that star themselves.
13 total: 8 story problem pages, 3 blank story frames
