Just in time for the Winter Olympics, I have an opportunity for students to practice geometry using the dimensions of a curling "sheet" and hockey rink. Many students will be watching these sports this week, and it will be the talk of the hallways! Bring that discussion into the classroom and have students connect math with real world current events!
Topics included are: finding the area of rectangles and circles, circumference of circles, converting square units, percents, and rounding.
I am including a step-by-step answer key for both parts along with a handful of teaching tips for the curling portion of this lesson. This could be done in class or given as a homework assignment.
