This is a simple 5 question interview that students ask their parents or family members regarding how they use math at work. There are many ways to extend this activity: graph building & data analysis is my favorite. This gets kids talking math with their family as well as with their classmates. This is one of the first activities I use to start the year.
I typically give each student 3 of the interview sheets as well as the Interview Notebook (which scripts out the conversation for students who need help with this area). I then have the students turn in the best one. In class, we graph the jobs on the included chart and use the bargraph numbers to determine max/min/range/etc.
Also included is a list of 21st Century Job Skills organized by subject. This is a good reference for when talking with middle school students about jobs and skills. I've included some image examples of how I've displayed the final product.
