Baseball has been in America since the 18th century and fantasy baseball continues to grow in popularity year after year. Both are full of math!!!!! This fun and engaging product allows students to practice and reinforce math skills while learning about baseball, both real and fantasy.
The first section, "Sportstistics: Baseball," enables students to examine 15 different ways that math is embedded into baseball, including home runs, stolen bases, wins, strikeouts, and player contracts.
Each of the 15 categories contains five questions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and graph/writing/higher level thinking question). This is a resource that could be used to enrich a math curriculum, in a math center, or in a small group or teamwork setting.
The second section, "Using Fantasy Baseball to Teach Math," introduces students to the exciting hobby of fantasy baseball. They learn about the statistical side of baseball, then use rankings and values to build a roster. Once their roster is complete, they use real season or projected statistics to calculate their scores and complete against their classmates! Teamwork and budgeting complement this math based activity.
Both of these products meet a high number of Common Core Math Standards in grades 5-7.
However you choose to use them, I am sure your students will enjoy it and you will see the positive results!
